James Bond was yesterday. Now the Rabtaldirndln are saving the world of Graz. With fireworks.
“Die Stadt der Rabtaldirndln” (The city of the Rabtaldirndln) is a film production and performance in equal measure and is based on familiar action hero settings à la “Sin City”, in which the goal is to save the city from disaster. The Rabtaldirndln theatre collective answers the question of how we want to live together in the city with playful, cheeky ideas. In their artistic scrutiny of social structures the actresses turn clichés upside down, appearing as saviours far removed from James Bond as a traditional male ideal, that they identify as the root of social evils.
The big final scene in which they save the city of Graz will be shot in a vacant warehouse. The audience play the part of extras. In true Bond tradition, the showdown culminates in a pyrotechnics fest. For this production, the Rabtaldirndln are cooperating with director Yosi Wanunu, with sociological researcher Karin Scaria-Braunstein providing expert assistance.
